Flor de Caña
Flor de Caña's story dates back to 1875 when Alfredo Francisco Pellas Canessa, an adventurous Italian, embarked on a journey to Nicaragua, leaving behind his family and the comforts of Europe. Initially, he invested in a successful steam boat route that transported passengers and goods during the California Gold Rush. However, with the Panama Canal and U.S. coast-to-coast railroad on the horizon, Alfredo Francisco sought a new adventure.
In 1890, he established the Flor de Caña distillery at the base of Nicaragua's San Cristóbal volcano, known for its fertile lands, enriched water, and hot volcanic climate. These natural elements played a crucial role in shaping the unique and smooth flavour of the rum.
Throughout its 130-year history, Flor de Caña has faced numerous challenges, including a plane crash, civil war, nationalisations, hyperinflation, fires, hurricanes, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions. Despite the odds, the company has remained a family business for five generations, a remarkable achievement given that only 3 in 10,000 family businesses reach the fifth generation.

The enduring well, still in operation after 300 years, and the meticulously tended cane fields reflect the essence of Mount Gay. This is more than a rum; it's a narrative you can taste in every bottle.
Owned by John Sober in 1703, Mount Gay's distillery later experienced a transformative era under Sir John Gay Alleyne, leading to the renaming of the distillery in his honor. The natural elements of Barbados, including water, cane, and airborne yeast, have always been inseparable from Mount Gay Rum's creation.
